‘Layers of Stillness’ by Younghui Kim 2022

The artwork, ‘Layers of Stillness’ is a real-time data-driven artwork that computationally captures a transforming scene of cozy Yeondong-myeon (Sejong City) as digital images. The images taken at different moments are superimposed on the aligned hanging screens in the exhibition space. This installation invites you to appreciate what these overlapped scenes of different moments reveal about the neighborhood.

What could be the subtle changes of this peaceful place when we see through the series of stillness made of light and time?

Through the previous artwork, ‘Bridge Crossing Series (2020-2021)’, the artist collected images of different moments in the same place as photographic data to seek unexpected visual elements. Unlike this previous series, the artist computationally captures the photographic images of the Yeondong-meon and projects from two different directions – with 2 HD projector – on the layers of the aligned, see-through screens. This experimental art piece repeats the revealing and disappearing of the subtle visual elements when the image of the past overlaps with the image of the present moment. This is an artistic process of seeking ‘visual outliers’ in the images of the historical neighborhood of Yeondong-meon connected in times and stillness.

실시간 카메라 데이터로 생성되는 미디어설치 작품, 세종시 연동면 커뮤니티센터 2F

본 작품은 세종시 연동 면과 같이 오랜 역사를 지닌 고즈넉한 장소에서의 시간적 흐름과 그 속에서 드러나는 크고 작은 섬세한 변화를 겹겹의 스크린에 투영하여 하나의 디지털 이미지로 중첩하여 관객이 다시 마주할 수 있도록 연출된 장소 특정 미디어설치물이다. 같은 장소 다른 순간의 모습을 정적인 빛의 이미지로 서로 마주보고, 중첩되면서 이 조용하고 평화로운 장소에서 우리가 미처 생각지 못했던 변화는 무엇일까. 세종시 연동면은 한국 근대작가이신 장욱진 생가를 품은 작은 동네이다. 미디어설치와 함께 들리는 사운드는 연동면에서 직접 수집된 소리모음으로 실내공간을 걸으면서 연동면을 오롯히 느낄 수 있다.

Younghui Kim expressed ‘Spring’ in 1 min 30 sec, computer generated motion graphic, projection mapped on the facade of the Busan Cinema Center, in December 2022 – as a part of the media facade project, <Four Seasons of Mirage> This project will be displayed in public until December 2023. Busan Cinema Center is a landmark of Busan for the renoun BIFF Busan International Film Festival.

This facade media projection mapping art project, is composed of four seasons, directed by Kyoungmi Kim, NMARA, sound by Jinuk Jo and Yemin Oh. Younghui expresses a season of ‘spring’ as after a long darkness of winter, a small light blooming into the branches of light, then transforms to the spring energy exploding into a flower.

작가노트: 깊은 겨울의 어둠을 뚫고 피어나는 봄의 에너지를 추상적으로 표현해 보았다. 봄의 기운은 어둠 속 한줄기 빛의 가지로 뻗어 나와 그 생명력이 꽃의 수술로 뿜어져 나와 어느 순간 주위를 환하게 밝히며 우리에게 따스한 희망을 상기시킨다. <봄, 김영희 2022>

I am sharing a making film for the projection mapping project, <Four Seasons of the Mirage>. I don’t appear in this making film due to my installation date overlapping for another exhibition but, it was 5 months long project collaborating with other professionals with the very paraticular facade of the Busan Cinema Center building. It was challenging as the wall is very dark, therefore absorb projection lights & the shape is not a pecfect squre. Still, the wall is significantly large and we managed to calibrate the gamma of the artworks!

Artist Talk at ISEA 2019, Gwangju, ACC

Younghui presented her Artist Talk, “Seeking for Outliers” at International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA) 2019 on Tuesday 25th of June, 4:15 PM at Asian Cultural Center, Gwangju South Korea.

She presented her PhD work-in-progress data art project, ‘Seeking for Outliers‘ at Lounge Space 5 (5-2) ACC Creation. It is exciting to discuss and hear feedback from peers in the digital art practice and research from all over the world. It was also motivating to attend to other artist talks on data sonification, bio art, robotic art and AI art practice and research.

As a part of the Platform Live Arts Program 2018, Marie Younghui Kim will have an exhibition titled, “The Sense of Data – Seoul 2018” at Platform-L Contemporary Art Center, Seoul, South Korea.

This exhibition is a part of her research “Artistic Exploration of Data Through Creative Practice” and supported by Platform-L and QUT (Queensland University of Technology).

<The Sense of Data> series is the third data art series following series of<Weight of Data 2016-8> and <mood.cloud-Data as Art 2014>. In the age of Big Data where our action, decisions and opinions appear to be digitally traced and hyper-connected in many digitally saturated societies, the artist questions about how our everyday lives are expressed and influenced through data. In this series, artist visualizes the live data of selfies related emotions and thoughts exposed in social media into bold graphic pattern along with colourful lights embedded in wearable; visualizes through an algorithm that uses Seoul City’s Open Datasets combined with the sensor-collected data to let data breath through wearable; and plays with the idea of her personal outliers that are leftover or unnoticed. Through this series, the artist begins to explore outliers of data through her art practice and aims to expand the use of real-time data as art material for conceptual art practice.

<The Sense of Data – Seoul 2018> 시리즈는 2014년도에 창작된 <mood.cloud-Data as Art>와 2016-2018년에 전시된 <Weight of Data>를 잇는 세번째 데이터 아트 시리즈로 초연결시대 삶의 흔적인 데이터를 통해 분석되고 예측되는 현대인들의 일상이 데이터에 의해 표현되고 영향을 받게 되는 현상에 대하여 질문을 던지기 시작한다. 이번 시리즈는 소셜미디어에 노출되고 있는 셀피 속 라이브한 감정과 생각을 분석하여 볼드 한 그래픽과 추상적 빛으로 시각화한 작품과 서울시 오픈데이터와 센서로 측정되는 환경데이터를 작가가 생각한 알고리즘에 따라 리얼타임으로 호흡하는 웨어러블 작품, 그리고 데이터 분석과 해석에서 버려지고 무시될 수 있는 소수의 의미를 찾아 고민한 작품을 선보인다. 김영희 작가는 이번 시리즈를 계기로 데이터 분석에서 무시되어지는 소수의 의미인 데이터 아웃라이어에 대한 예술적 이해와 탐구를 시작했으며 이러한 데이터 속 아웃라이어의 사회적 의미를 예술적 영역으로 확장시킬 수 있는 가능성을 탐색해 본다.

DataCook Workshop

Younghui is excited to meet other likely minded creative makers and start a community.

2. Exhibition at L U C E R I U M (Gwangju National Museum of Science) 광주국립과학관 2015. 7.3 – 9.13

Younghui’s artwork, Scales(2014) is repaired and installed for the art and mathematics exhibition, “Keys and Mathematics” at the LUCERIUM (Gwangju, S. Korea). This kinetic installation project is inspired by Fibonacci numbers and pinecone scales. When the visitor blow one’s breath to the installed pole, the scales will open up. Each scales are made of wooden veneer papers – hand folded by the artist. The exhibition is open until Sept. 13th, 2015.

피보나치수열에 영감을 받아 제작된 인터랙티브 설치작품, 비늘(Scales, 2014)이 광주국립과학관에 초대되어 열쇠-수학체험전에서 전시를 하게 되었습니다. 본 작품은 244개의 목재종이를 접어 만든 설치물로써 입김을 불어 넣으면 살짝 열렸다 닫히는 설치물입니다. 광주국립과학관은 꽤 멋진 공간이며 다양한 상설전시가 있어서 아이들을 데리고 가기에 매우 유익한 장소인 것 같습니다.

26년간 미술책의 출판만을 고집해 온 도서출판 재원에서 Felix Park의 예술가 사진집 ‘아티스트, 그 예술적 영혼의 초상 – 펠릭스가 만난 127인의 예술가’란 제목의 책이 한글과 영문으로 출간되었습니다. This book by the curator, Felix Park is both in English and Korean.

저희는 이번 작업에서 회화, 사진, 설치, 비디오, 조각, 퍼포먼스 등 예술의 전 분야에서 왕성한 활동을 보이는 한국의 대표 작가 분들을 한권의 책에 담을 수 있다는 것이 참으로 즐거웠습니다. 이런 기회도 쉬운 일이 아닐 것입니다. 작업 내내 이런 작가 분들을 책에만 담고 그치기에는 아쉽다는 여운이 진하게 남았습니다. 하여 이 책에 실린 작가 분들을 금보성 아트센터와 더불어 지면이 아닌, 작품으로 다시 한 번 초대하여 ‘아티스트, 그 예술적 영혼의 초상 특별전’이란 타이틀로 미술 전시회를 개최합니다. 다양한 작가가 참여하는 이번 전시는 분명 한국 현대미술의 지난 역사와 현재를 통찰할 것이고 미래를 가늠하는 작업이며, 또한 한국 현대미술의 현주소를 가장 확실하게 보여 주는 현장이 될 것입니다.
